Ucuuba butter is a hard butter extracted from the seeds of the Ucuuba tree from the Amazon. Cold pressed from the seeds, it is unique because it is low in linoleic acid and low in PUFA. Ucuuba butter is an incredible ingredient in our skincare products because of its unique fatty acid profile and dry, powdery hand-feel. Its low-PUFA composition makes it an excellent option to balance out the fatty acid profile in some of our products, such as Reishi Rose. When you rub it into your skin, it moisturizes without leaving an oily effect, and it has a matte finish unlike other oils that can leave your skin looking shiny.
The Science Behind Ucuuba Butter
The Ucuuba tree is native to Central and South America, and the seeds contain up to 70% fat. Ucuuba butter is almost purely saturated, without any monounsaturated or unsaturated fats. Its fatty acid profile is made up of about 75% myristic acid, which provides intense anti-aging effects, promotes skin elasticity, and slows the development of wrinkles. Ucuuba butter also has strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, making it a great ingredient for treating dry (eczema) and inflamed (acne, irritated) skin conditions.
Ucuuba Butter History and Uses
Ucuuba butter has a rich history and cultural significance among the Amazonian peoples. The name "Ucuuba" itself is derived from the Tupi language, which is the dialect spoken by indigenous communities in the region. In the past and today, Ucuuba butter extracted from the seeds was used for the treatment of various skin conditions and wounds like surgical incisions, cracked skin, and superficial burns.
